Does a classic import need type approval?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Many older classics are exempt from vehicle approval, but you still need strong age, identity, import and registration evidence.
Official position
GOV.UK says cars and small minibuses over 10 years old and light goods vehicles over 10 years old do not need vehicle approval. V355/5 still expects the V55/5 approval boxes to be handled correctly, with the exemption explained where appropriate.
What to do
Prove the vehicle age using foreign documents, manufacturer evidence or recognised dating evidence.
Check the exact vehicle category before relying on the 10-year exemption.
Use box 72 to explain the approval exemption if that is the route.
Do not confuse type approval exemption with historic tax class or MOT exemption.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a classic needs no paperwork because it is old.
- Claiming approval exemption without proof of age.
- Using historic tax class as if it proves approval exemption.
