Approval, CoC & IVA

Can I use an MOT instead of IVA for an import?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

No, not where approval is required. MOT checks roadworthiness; vehicle approval shows the imported vehicle meets environmental and safety regulations for registration.

Official position

GOV.UK says vehicle approval shows an imported vehicle meets environmental and safety regulations, and you need proof of approval to register and tax the vehicle. V355/5 separately lists proof of a valid MOT for older vehicles and CoC, GB conversion, IVA or MSVA certificates where appropriate.

What to do

1

Check whether your vehicle needs approval first.

2

Get MOT evidence if the vehicle age and registration route require it.

3

Get IVA, MSVA, GB conversion IVA or CoC evidence where the approval route requires it.

4

Do not assume a VIN-only MOT replaces the approval certificate.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking an MOT pass proves UK type approval.
  • Using a pre-booked MOT journey as proof the vehicle is registerable.
  • Sending only MOT evidence when V355/5 also expects approval evidence.
