Will DVLA return the foreign logbook after V55/5?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

No. GOV.UK says you will not get the original foreign registration certificate back.

Official position

GOV.UK says the original foreign registration certificate is required to show when the vehicle was manufactured and that you will not get it back. V355/5 says DVLA returns documents apart from the original non-UK registration document or certificate.

What to do

1

Scan or photograph the foreign registration certificate before posting it.

2

Send the original only when you are ready to lose possession of it permanently.

3

Use a prepaid special delivery envelope if you want other returned documents sent by special delivery.

4

Contact DVLA within the stated time if expected returned documents do not arrive.

Common mistakes

  • Posting a rare original foreign logbook without keeping a copy.
  • Assuming special delivery will make DVLA return the foreign certificate.
  • Waiting too long to chase missing returned identity or supporting documents.
