Submission & DVLA pack

What if DVLA returns my V55/5 application?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Fix exactly what DVLA asks for, then rebuild the pack carefully. Do not just repost the same documents unchanged.

Official position

V355/5 says DVLA will not accept applications that are not signed or filled in properly, and says damaged or altered cheques will cause the application to be rejected and returned. GOV.UK also says imported-vehicle applications need original supporting documents and not photocopies or faxed copies.

What to do

1

Read the DVLA return letter and identify the precise blocker: signature, payment, missing original, identity evidence, approval, NOVA or mismatch.

2

Correct the underlying issue before resending.

3

Recheck date-sensitive evidence such as insurance, MOT and tax start date.

4

Keep a copy of the returned letter and the corrected pack for your records.

Common mistakes

  • Resending immediately without fixing the reason for return.
  • Correcting one missing item but creating a new mismatch in the V55/5 boxes.
  • Ignoring payment problems such as an altered cheque or wrong tax amount.
