What if DVLA returns my V55/5 application?

Official position
V355/5 says DVLA will not accept applications that are not signed or filled in properly, and says damaged or altered cheques will cause the application to be rejected and returned. GOV.UK also says imported-vehicle applications need original supporting documents and not photocopies or faxed copies.

Read the DVLA return letter and identify the precise blocker: signature, payment, missing original, identity evidence, approval, NOVA or mismatch.
Correct the underlying issue before resending.
Recheck date-sensitive evidence such as insurance, MOT and tax start date.
