What documents do I need for an Italian import V55/5?

Short answer

Prepare the original Italian registration evidence plus purchase/collection evidence, NOVA/HMRC confirmation, approval or CoC evidence and the V55/5 support documents.

Official position

GOV.UK says you must register a permanent import with DVLA and send extra supporting documents, including proof of approval and the original foreign registration certificate. HMRC/NOVA must be processed before DVLA registration.

What to do

Keep original Italian registration documents and the purchase invoice or bill of sale.

Use CoC or approval evidence for type approval, emissions and technical V55/5 fields where available.

Check whether GB conversion IVA or other approval evidence is required.

Make sure the first registration date, manufacture year and VIN match the documents and V55/5 boxes.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming an EU registration certificate removes the need for NOVA/HMRC processing.
  • Using the Italian registration date as the first UK registration date.
