What documents do I need for an Italian import V55/5?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Prepare the original Italian registration evidence plus purchase/collection evidence, NOVA/HMRC confirmation, approval or CoC evidence and the V55/5 support documents.

Official position

GOV.UK says you must register a permanent import with DVLA and send extra supporting documents, including proof of approval and the original foreign registration certificate. HMRC/NOVA must be processed before DVLA registration.

What to do

1

Keep original Italian registration documents and the purchase invoice or bill of sale.

2

Use CoC or approval evidence for type approval, emissions and technical V55/5 fields where available.

3

Check whether GB conversion IVA or other approval evidence is required.

4

Make sure the first registration date, manufacture year and VIN match the documents and V55/5 boxes.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming an EU registration certificate removes the need for NOVA/HMRC processing.
  • Using the Italian registration date as the first UK registration date.
  • Leaving list price, emissions or approval boxes blank when the CoC has the information.
