What documents do I need for a Netherlands import V55/5?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

You need original Dutch registration evidence plus the normal UK import pack: NOVA/HMRC, VAT/duty if due, approval evidence, MOT where needed and V55/5 supporting documents.

Official position

GOV.UK says imported vehicles require extra supporting documents, including proof of approval and the original foreign registration certificate. You cannot register the vehicle until HMRC/NOVA has been processed.

What to do

1

Keep the original Netherlands registration document or export/registration evidence.

2

Keep invoice, collection date and transport/customs evidence.

3

Use CoC or approval paperwork to fill type approval, emissions and technical V55/5 fields.

4

Check whether left-hand-drive modifications or GB conversion IVA are needed.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming Dutch export plates or export paperwork equals UK registration permission.
  • Leaving type approval fields inconsistent with the CoC or approval certificate.
  • Forgetting that DVLA will not return the original foreign registration certificate.
