NOVA & HMRC

What if NOVA is under a company or agent name?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

That can be normal, but the evidence must identify the same vehicle. Get written proof showing the VIN or chassis number and processed HMRC status.

Official position

GOV.UK says for private individuals or non-VAT registered companies having the vehicle shipped, the NOVA declaration can be made by the shipping company, customs agent or HMRC CARS. DVLA registration still depends on HMRC processing the correct vehicle.

What to do

1

Ask the company or agent for the NOVA reference, HMRC confirmation or written declaration evidence.

2

Check the VIN/chassis number, make, model and import date match your vehicle.

3

Keep invoice, MRN, C88/E2 or customs documents that connect the agent declaration to your purchase.

4

If the seller cannot connect the NOVA record to the vehicle, resolve that before paying full value or posting V55/5.

Common mistakes

  • Rejecting valid agent evidence just because it is not in your name.
  • Accepting agent evidence with no VIN or chassis number.
  • Assuming a company import record proves ownership.
