What documents do I need for a US import V55/5?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

Prepare the standard DVLA import pack and original US title or registration evidence. A bill of sale helps ownership and HMRC value evidence, but it is not a replacement for vehicle identity papers.

Official position

GOV.UK says DVLA needs original imported-vehicle supporting documents, including the original foreign registration certificate, proof of approval and evidence of collection date. HMRC/NOVA may also need invoice or bill of sale evidence, customs/MRN documents and official VIN evidence.

What to do

1

Get the US title or official registration/title evidence before shipping if possible.

2

Keep the bill of sale, invoice, shipping/customs papers and MRN or equivalent import evidence.

3

Make the 17-character VIN match exactly across US title, NOVA, MOT, approval and V55/5 box 32.

4

Check whether the US-spec vehicle needs IVA or conversions for lights, speedometer, rear fog lamp and other UK requirements.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking a bill of sale replaces a missing US title.
  • Ignoring salvage, non-repairable or rebuilt title brands.
  • Submitting US paperwork with a VIN typo and hoping DVLA will correct it.
