Can I road-register a quad bike?

Possibly, but the quad must fit a registerable vehicle category and meet identity, approval, tax, insurance and road-use requirements.

Official position

GOV.UK MSVA guidance lists light quadricycles and heavy quadricycles as eligible vehicle types. It also says vehicles without the required approval must use MSVA, and the vehicle needs a VIN before MSVA inspection.

What to do

Identify whether the vehicle is a light quadricycle, heavy quadricycle, agricultural vehicle or off-road-only machine.

Check for a VIN or chassis number before booking MSVA.

Resolve import/NOVA status and ownership evidence if it came from abroad.

Use the correct V55/5 body type, wheelplan, approval and tax-class fields.

Common mistakes

Assuming all quad bikes can be registered as motorcycles.
Ignoring MSVA because the quad has been used on private land.
