Basic IVA vs normal IVA: which one do I need?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Basic IVA applies only to listed categories such as left-hand-drive, personal imports and some rebuilt or amateur-built vehicles. If your vehicle is not in those categories, GOV.UK says you must apply for normal IVA.
Official position
GOV.UK says there are 2 IVA inspection levels: basic and normal. Basic IVA is a visual inspection and other tests for listed categories. Normal IVA is more detailed and requires extra standards and documentary evidence.
What to do
Check whether your vehicle falls into a basic IVA category, such as left-hand drive, personal import, amateur built, rebuilt, very low volume or motor caravan.
If not, assume normal IVA may be needed and confirm before applying.
Read the DVSA IVA scheme guidance and technical manual for the vehicle type.
Use the approval certificate details consistently when completing V55/5.
Common mistakes
- Choosing basic IVA because it sounds easier rather than because the vehicle qualifies.
- Assuming all imports qualify as personal imports.
- Not preparing documentary evidence for normal IVA.
