• Match the registration and VIN on the vehicle to the V5C; check the seller’s details and MOT record.
• Keep a dated receipt recording the vehicle, price and buyer/seller details. The V5C is not proof of ownership.
• Receive the green new keeper slip (V5C/2) from the seller.
• Ask the seller to notify DVLA of the change of keeper and keep any confirmation.
• Tax the vehicle before driving, or declare your own SORN if keeping it off the road. The seller’s tax and SORN do not transfer.
• Arrange insurance and check MOT and roadworthiness before driving.
• Check the new V5C when it arrives and contact DVLA if it does not arrive within the official timescale.
