Who can issue a dating certificate for DVLA?
Reviewed 2026-07-10
Short answer
Use the strongest credible source: manufacturer evidence first, or a recognised vehicle enthusiast/owners’ club where appropriate.
Official position
GOV.UK says DVLA might accept other proof of manufacture date such as a letter from the manufacturer or a vehicle enthusiast club if the original foreign registration certificate is missing. For old vehicles using V765, GOV.UK refers to endorsement by a vehicle owners’ club.
What to do
Ask the manufacturer or official importer if they can confirm the manufacture date from the VIN or chassis number.
If manufacturer evidence is not available, use a recognised owners’ club for the marque or vehicle type.
Make sure the letter identifies the vehicle by VIN, chassis or frame number and gives a clear manufacture date or year.
Keep club inspection notes, photos and supporting evidence with the V55/5 or V765 file.
Common mistakes
- Using a generic valuation letter as dating evidence.
- Submitting a club letter that does not identify the vehicle being registered.
- Confusing V765 original-number evidence with a normal imported-vehicle V55/5 application.
