Do I need V112 for a historic imported motorcycle?

Reviewed 2026-07-10

Short answer

If you are claiming MOT exemption, expect to use V112 evidence when taxing the vehicle. The bike must still be roadworthy.

Official position

GOV.UK says vehicles built or first registered more than 40 years ago may not need an MOT if no substantial changes have been made, and that V112 is the form used to declare MOT exemption. Historic vehicles still need to be taxed, even if there is no tax to pay.

What to do

1

Check the build or first registration date from reliable age evidence.

2

Check whether the motorcycle has been substantially changed.

3

Use V112 when declaring MOT exemption as part of taxing the vehicle where required.

4

Do not claim exemption if you cannot confirm the vehicle meets the criteria.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming all old motorcycles are MOT-exempt regardless of modifications.
  • Forgetting that MOT-exempt vehicles must still be roadworthy.
  • Using V112 as proof of age or ownership.
