What if the vehicle was imported years ago and never registered?

Short answer
There is no time-based shortcut. You still need HMRC/NOVA status, import evidence, ownership proof, vehicle identity, approval or MOT evidence, and a V55/5 pack.
Official position
GOV.UK says private individuals may need import documents, a bill of sale if bought in the last 6 months, or a current in-person UK valuation if bought more than 6 months ago, plus official VIN or chassis evidence. DVLA still needs the import and registration evidence before issuing a V5C.
What to do
Find the import trail: shipping company, customs agent, previous owner, MRN, C88, E2, invoice or old correspondence.
Get a current valuation if HMRC needs one because the purchase is older than 6 months.
Gather VIN/chassis evidence, foreign registration or title, dating evidence and proof of ownership chain.
Expect the process to take longer than a fresh import because missing evidence must be reconstructed.
Common mistakes
- Assuming old imports are exempt from HMRC/NOVA handling.
- Assuming a barn find only needs a dating certificate and V55/5.
- Paying registered-vehicle money for a vehicle with unresolved import status.
